On October 31, 1517, Martin Luther nailed his 95 Theses to the the door of Castle Church in Wittenberg. This moment is usually considered the the beginning of the protestant reformation, changed more than worship.  It had a major impact on art.  While smaller, more private forms of imagery such as book illustrations were accepted, large paintings and sculptures were, for a time, considered idolatrous.
