Opportunities to Serve

Wondering how you can serve the wider community?  Here is a small sampling of opportunities.

COVER HOME REPAIR:  To volunteer on a COVER jobsite no prior experience with the work or tools is necessary. You are welcome to sign up for one day at a time. COVER relies on volunteers to complete home repair projects for community members in need.  They typically engage over 300 volunteers per year. Learn new skills, share the skills you already have, and engage in meaningful work that will make a difference in someone’s everyday life. Visit For more information about serving the community through COVER Home Repair, visit COVER or call them at (802) 296-7241, ext 104.

HABITAT FOR HUMANITY:  The Social ministry committee at OSLC has a long standing working relationship with the Upper Valley branch of Habitat for Humanity. It you would be willing to help with lunches for the Saturday work crews or if you’d like to volunteer with a work crew, contact Shelia Cardamone or the church office.

DISMAS HOUSE IN HARTFORD, VERMONT, SEEKS VOLUNTEERS TO COOK AND SHARE MEALS WITH CLIENTS: Dismas House facilitates reconciliation of former prisoners into society through the development of a supportive community. Building these relationships is of great importance to former offenders. As one Dismas resident put it, Volunteers coming to evening meals tells me I am worth something. A group from OSLC prepares and shares a meal with at Dismas on the first Wednesday of the month. To volunteer or for more information, contact Gisela Jones  or the church office.

SUNDAY WORSHIP TEAMS: Our team leaders are doing a great job in coordinating our combined talents to make our Sunday worship services flow smoothly. If you haven’t yet contributed in one of the many roles (Assisting Minister, Usher, Communion Assistant, Greeter, Reader, Communion Bread-maker, Hospitality Hour set-up & clean-up, or Snack-maker extraordinaire), please do so! It may seem like our worship services operate as a well-oiled machine, but that is only due to the many hands working behind-the-scenes. We’ll soon be offering training for those who wish to learn a new role. Please do consider what talent or skill you may be able to contribute to making our shared worship experience even better with your involvement. Not sure what team you’re on, or want to learn a new role? Please talk to Kari Jo Grant or contact the church office.

COMMUNITY DINNER PREPARATION: A team prepares and serves dinner at the LISTEN Community Center in White River Junction regularly and would welcome additional help if you are interested.  This is a wonderful way to spend time with community members and it is fun!  Contact Dianne Kelecy or the church office for more information.

FRIENDS PROGRAM: The Mission of the Friends Program is to strengthen communities by building relationships that empower people, encourage community service, and restore faith in the human spirit. They accomplish this by providing youth mentoring, emergency housing to homeless families, and opportunities for seniors to actively contribute to the community. Through four programs, over 900 volunteers provided 250,000 hours of service, benefiting 4,500 N.H. children, families, and seniors. The Friends Foster Grandparents Program brings together needy children and loving retired adults who are deeply enriched by new relationships. Volunteers are trained, then serve in schools, non-profit childcare centers and other youth service organizations to help set children on the path to a successful future. This federal program pays a tax-free stipend to income-eligible retirees to help them afford to volunteer and make ends meet. To learn more about each or to inquire about volunteer opportunities, please call (603) 228-1193.
